About the Donor
The Asiah Abdullah Bursary is supported by the Shamid Family, in honour of its late matriarch and to bestow similar opportunities on others that she envisioned for her own family.
Asiah Abdullah (née Chou Hak San), a migrant from Southern China, came to Singapore before 1940 to take up a variety of domestic work. Despite not having a formal education in English or Chinese, she went on to establish a home with a Southern Indian Muslim migrant in Singapore and successfully raised and managed a large family. The late matriarch was instrumental in ensuring that her 4 daughters attended school and were given the same opportunities as her sons, empowering them to be their own persons and pursue their own goals and dreams.
Today she is proudly remembered by her 7 children, 16 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren.
