Equipment failure can lead to significant safety risks, costly downtime, and environmental damage. Therefore, Risk Based Inspection (RBI) is essential to prioritise inspection efforts, predicting failures and enhancing safety and efficiency.

In traditional time-based inspection programmes, process plants determine the scope and depth of inspections by assessing the rate of in-service damage and the consequences of potential failures. RBI refines this approach by focusing on two main factors: the Probability of Failure (POF) and the Consequence of Failure (COF). POF examines the likelihood of equipment failure due to damage, deterioration, or degradation, while COF evaluates the potential impact of such failures on people, equipment, and the work environment. By identifying potential damage, its location, spread rate, and likely first point of failure, RBI helps plants prioritise equipment inspections, optimise methods and frequencies, and implement effective risk mitigation measures.

This course introduces learners to the RBI framework and methodology, enabling them to establish and implement RBI programme aligned with API 580 principles. Learners will master asset integrity control, focusing on economic value and financial return. The course emphasises improving maintenance decisions by integrity risk information into the decision-making process and focuses resources on high-risk equipment failures that could lead to system failures.

It covers methods to reduce maintenance costs through optimised planned maintenance activities and offers objective evaluation of alternative inspection and test strategies. Additionally, learners will learn to prioritise corrective maintenance activities and establish systems to collect and analyse failure data and causes.
