Research Interests
-
Systems thinking and system dynamics
Applying systems thinking and system dynamics in addressing complex organizational (e.g., in strategy development and implementation, in complex project management), societal, and sustainability challenges.
-
Information systems management and implementation
Uncover the intertwining relationships between people, processes, and technologies, especially in the context of driving systematic and/or transformative changes within an organization or society. Some topics include IT-enabled business transformation, ICT project management, and its dynamics.
-
Teaching and Learning
Particularly interested in the design and application of Learning through play methodology to enhance student's engagement, deepen student's thinking capabilities, and improve student's learning while having fun doing so.
-
Teaching and Research Case Study
Design and writing of effective teaching case study especially in the area of change management and system dynamics and in the conduct of in-depth research case study to uncover insights of the inner working of how things in organization and society works in a certain way.
Current Projects
- Implementation of Systems Thinking in Public Policy: Taking Eco-Product Value Realization as an example– Present
The project objectives are to:
- Explore the successful cases of Eco-Product Value Realization and develop systems thinking and system dynamics models to explain the principal programs and policies leading to the successful outcomes of the Eco-Product Value Realization success stories.
- Conduct the field studies of Eco-Product Value Realization in China.
- Make the system dynamics modelling more accessible through group model building, help decision-makers optimize their policy-making and create real change to the world. This can be done by publishing the results in a public policy relevant “extension bulletin” format for “decision-makers” in the public and private sectors
The project was awarded by the Balaton Group: http://www.balatongroup.org and the project amount is USD3,000/=.
- Suboptimality game platform and training as a lever for change– Present
The goal of this project is to provide transformative ways for decision-makers: a systemic view where they could experience the benefits of suboptimality to feed robustness in a fluctuating world. We propose to co-create two game platforms where participants could test suboptimal solutions to address their issues: (i) an online platform where users can enter parameters in set conditions (with stochastic variations), with the goal to survive for the longest time (with options ranging from over-optimized to suboptimal inputs), (ii) an in-person training program (small group) where participants share their (real) current issues and attempt to find the most robust way forward, with the help of disruptive/fluctuating elements and pinpointing the added values of their weaker points (once integrated in a systemic view). In both cases, the process forces the users to adapt and transform their projects or initial question until they tick 3 milestones (human health & social health & water-soil-biomass health), followed by a stress test to make sure it is robust. The project was awarded by the Balaton Group: http://www.balatongroup.org and the project amount is USD20,00/=.
- Societal Impacts for Sustainability: Proliferating Thailand’s Sustainability Village Know-How to Scotland and Singapore.– Present
The project objectives are to:
-
Distill a set of ideas, activities, and lessons from living and learning in the sustainability village in Thailand that can be readily implemented in Scotland and Singapore to drive sustainability awareness and actions in those countries.
-
Co-design and test the ideas distilled into feasible implementation plans to be implemented in Scotland and Singapore.
-
Document the progress, experiences, and best practices that can be readily shared with others.
The project was awarded by the Balaton Group: http://www.balatongroup.org and the project amount is USD13,700/=.
-
- Learning and Teaching with System Archetypes– Present
The project objectives are to:
- Produce extensive written materials on how system archetypes can be effectively applied to solve complex sustainability problems.
- Some of these written materials will be published in book form. Others will be distributed via the Internet or directed to a journal.
- Produce a carefully designed training curriculum, with participant materials and set of slides for use in training programs on how to use systems archetypes to solve complex sustainability problems.
The project was awarded by the Balaton Group: http://www.balatongroup.org and the project amount is USD20,000/=.
Past Projects
- Deepening collaborative efforts in improving systems dynamics application for sustainable development policy analysis: taking China’s Ecology Poverty Alleviation Policy as an example–
The project objectives are to:
-
Develop a report on the application of system dynamics on China’s ecological poverty alleviation policy with first-hand data from the field studies.
-
Deliver a public presentation on the system dynamics modelling to solve complex sustainability challenge with workshop feedback obtained from various stakeholders.
-
Publish the finding in the Balaton Group bulletin and other applied research outlet
The project was awarded by the Balaton Group: http://www.balatongroup.org and the project amount is USD3,000/=.
-
- Improving RC4 student's systems thinking capabilities with LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY®–
The project objective is to investigate into the effect of applying LEGO(R) Serious Play(R) method in the teaching of system dynamics module on enhancing student's systems thinking capabilities.
The project grant was founded by the Centre for Teaching and Learning of NUS and for an amount of S$9,535.00/=
