Biography
Dr. Mary Chen Xiaorong is currently a Senior Lecturer with the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT), and a member of the SIT Health and Social Sciences Cluster’s Clinical Practice Education Committee. Prior to joining SIT, she was a Nurse Educator with SingHealth Polyclinics and Singapore General Hospital. As an Educator at SingHealth Polyclinics, she did learner needs analysis and planned Continuing Education Training for the nurses annually. She also taught in chronic disease management programmes such as Asthma management and Diabetes Management. She was a member of the SingHealth Polyclinics Research Committee, conducting research training to the doctors and nurses and review research proposals.
As an educator at Singapore General Hospital, she planned and managed new nurses’ foundation training programmes, to help the newly recruited nurses to transit into their various clinical settings. She was the Chairperson of the SingHealth Nurses’ Research Council, organised Research Interest Day and research consultation clinics to help the nurses to exchange research ideas and conduct research studies. She also led research studies on the nursing student’s Pre-Registration Clinical Practice (PRCP) experiences and the nurse educator’s experiences in simulated teaching experiences. With a group of Advanced Practice Nurses, she led systematic review in the pain management of patients with painful chronic skin ulcers. From 2008, she was the facilitator in the Asia Pacific Evidence-Based Medicine Nursing Workshop and Conference, and had the opportunities to work with and learn from reputable international faculty like, Gordon Guyatt of McMaster University, Craig Mellis of University of Sydney and Antonio Dans of University of the Philippines College of Medicine.
She had many years of clinical teaching experiences as a Senior Clinical Instructor, teaching new nurses and nursing students of clinical skills and the management of patients in various clinical settings. During her five years as a Senior Clinical Instructor, she taught nursing students from Nanyang Polytechnic, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Institute of Technical Education and Alice Lee Centre for Nursing Studies, NUS. She was also a certified industrial trainer by Workforce Development Agency and involved in the training of adult learners who optioned to switch their careers. She was nominated by her students as the Best Clinical Teacher.
She was awarded a MOH sponsorship to pursue her Master of Education from the University of Sydney. In 2015, SIT sponsored her to pursue her Doctorate in Education at the Institute of Education, University College London. For her Doctorate research, she pursued her passion in work-based learning and conducted ethnographic research among a group of new nurses working with experienced nurses and other healthcare professionals in a tertiary hospital in Singapore. In 2020, She was awarded Doctor in Education in Social Sciences by UCL. At SIT, she joined the pioneer group of faculty members to develop the SITUoG Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) programme.
She has extensive clinical nursing care and clinical teaching experiences in both Singapore and China. Her current research interest is in work-based continuing education, students’ work integrated learning, workers’ capability development and role adaptation, extension and transformation through work and learning.
