John Yong

Biography
John Yong has more than 27 years of experience in light alloy research, particularly on aluminium, magnesium alloys and its composites. His area of interest includes liquid forging and casting of non-ferrous material, magnesium bulk and sheet forming, processing of metal matrix composites, bio and nanostructured materials. John publishes extensively in the peer-reviewed journal and international conference in the field of manufacturing processes and composite materials. He chaired several international conferences and was appointed as member of various scientific and advisory committees. John and his research team were awarded the 2008 National Technology Award for their contribution to the development of liquid forging technology. He also received the Singapore National Academy of Science Young Scientist of the Year Award in 2004 for his research on novel manufacturing processes for light weight metal, as well as the Lord Austin prize by The Institute of Electrical Engineers in 1997 for his research on magnesium alloy.
John serve as Chairman of the Manufacturing Standards Committee under the Singapore Standards Council since 2017. He is also a member of the Singapore Standards Council and Member of the Coordinating Committee for Smart Nation. He co-leads the A*STAR-EDB Joint Industry Sector Planning (JISP) on Lasers & Optics.
John was the Deputy Executive Director and Director of the Industry Development Office at A*STAR SIMTech from April 2014 to July 2024. He oversees the Precision Engineering Centre of Innovation (PE COI), Manufacturing Productive Technology Centre (MPTC), Sustainability Manufacturing Centre (SMC) and Innovation Factory (IF) at the institute to support the manufacturing companies in Singapore. Under his leadership, the PE COI supported local Precision Engineering companies to adopt advanced manufacturing technologies to advance their business. Since 2007, the centre reached out to more than 15,000 industry participants, completed 1,600 projects, and 840 consultancies.
John was also a director at the Land Transport Authority (LTA) from May 2021 to April 2024. He has helped to set up two new divisions on Innovation and Analytics and the Operations Policy and Strategy to support the Traffic and Road Operations Group in LTA. He guided the newly setup team in LTA to win the DATxLTA competition in 2022 and 2023, and the team went on to win the first prize at the Whole-of-Government (WOG) data analytics competition in Nov 2023.
