Gain an in-depth understanding of Singapore’s sustainability legislation, policies, and frameworks, as well as insights into global perspectives and comparative frameworks.
This module explores the environmental and sustainability laws that shape Singapore’s approach to sustainable development, examining areas such as climate policy, waste management, and resource conservation.
Learners will acquire a comprehensive understanding of Singapore’s regulatory landscape and compare it with international best practices, enabling them to critically analyse the effectiveness and impact of these frameworks.
This module is part of the Graduate Certificate in Sustainability (GCert in Sust PP) and supports the Engineering Chartership in Sustainability by the Institution of Engineers Singapore. SIT, one of two IHLs partnering with the IES Academy, offers the full suite of modules for those pursuing the chartership.
Who Should Attend
Learners who are seeking to enhance their expertise in environmental sustainability across diverse industry sectors, including sustainability officers, policymakers, managers, and business owners.
Prerequisites
- For learners who are not pursuing Engineering Sustainability Chartership:
- A Bachelor's degree from a recognised university
- For learners who are pursuing Engineering Sustainability Chartership:
- An engineering degree or an equivalent qualification recognised by the Professional Engineers Board Singapore (PEB)
- A STEM-based degree meeting the Chartered Engineer (CEng) qualification requirements (IES chapter) and seek CEng accreditation

Explore the Singapore Green Plan 2030, Green Mark, Resource Sustainability Act, Energy Conservation Act, and Carbon Pricing Act
Climate Policy and Mitigation
Analyse Singapore’s climate resilience strategy, adaptation measures, and the impact of international agreements like the Paris Agreement
Waste Management and Circular Economy
Examine Singapore’s waste management policies, including the Resource Sustainability Act, Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), and recycling initiatives
Water Management and Resource Conservation
Learn more about Singapore’s water policies, desalination, and the NEWater project as models of sustainable resource management
Sustainable Urban Development
Understand the role of legislation in promoting green buildings, urban planning, and nature conservation
Global Sustainability Frameworks and Agreements
Examine various frameworks such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and the Convention on Biological Diversity

agreements - Evaluate the impact of specific legislation on sustainability outcomes in Singapore

- Critically assess the strengths, limitations, and future directions of Singapore’s sustainability

Certificate and Assessment
A Certificate of Attainment will be issued to participants who:
- Attend at least 75% of the module; and
- Undertake and pass credit bearing assessment (worth 3 credits) during the module, which can be stacked towards the Graduate Certificate in Sustainability Principles and Practices
Participants who meet the attendance requirement but do not pass the assessment will receive a Certificate of Participation.
Assessment Plan
Learners will have to complete a project assignment.
