Designing and Prototyping Emergency 3rd Rail Joint Clamp

The 3rd rail joint is an essential component in the railway as it ensures that electricity passes through different sections of 3rd rails, as well as to sustain the alignment of the 3rd rails. This project designs and develops an emergency 3rd rail joint clamp to mitigate the issue of a 3rd rail joint break and concurrently maintain the alignment of the 3rd rail joint. The proposed emergency 3rd rail joint clamp also eases the workload of the maintenance team by reducing the time taken for recovery actions.

Automatic Continuous 3rd Rail Structural Gauge

The 3rd rail structural gauging is a preventive maintenance task performed to ensure that the 3rd rail structure is within tolerance in order not to cause damage to the trains’ current collector shoes. This project proves the concept that the 3rd rail structural gauging can be continuously conducted and can possibly detect tunnel features that are close enough to the gauge to cause damage upon impact.

IoT Project: Smart Rubbish Bin

This video showcase student projects from Year 1 Computer Programming Language module. Students are tasked to use what they have learnt from this module to build an Internet of Things (IoT) prototype with Data Analytics capability. This IoT Project is a smart rubbish bin that is contactless and would alert users when it is time to empty the bin.

Aircraft Systems Engineering
Flight Stability and Dynamics on Paper Plane 2

The purpose of this project is to demonstrate the principles of in-flight stability and estimate the maximum lift and drag forces of a paper plane. Students are required to test and launch three different paper plane designs and determine if the measurements of the paper plane, lift and drag forces as well as glide angles contribute to the stability of the plane.

Flight Stability and Dynamics on Paper Plane 1

The purpose of this project is to demonstrate the principles of in-flight stability and estimate the maximum lift and drag forces of a paper plane. Students are required to test and launch three different paper plane designs and determine if the measurements of the paper plane, lift and drag forces as well as glide angles contribute to the stability of the plane.

IoT Project: Security Lock

This video showcase student projects from Year 1 Computer Programming Language module. Students are tasked to use what they have learnt from this module to build an Internet of Things (IoT) prototype with Data Analytics capability. This IoT Project is a security lock that restricts access based on employee ID.

Computer Engineering
Safety Management Solution for Delivery Cyclist

The Safety Management Solution for Delivery Cyclist project is a sensor device to detect and alert if a cyclist is not wearing a helmet or has a fever.

Robotic Systems
Robotics Systems First Year Students' Project Demonstration

This video showcases the demonstration of RSE students’ collective work in their project module, RSE1101. They are required to apply basic skills they have learnt in their first year which covers areas in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical/Electronics & Software Engineering, Systems Engineering and Project Management. Using VR goggles and GoPro Max, the students teleoperate their platform wirelessly to the onboard microcontroller that they coded with sensors performing autonomous obstacle avoidance activities.

Mechanical Engineering
Holographic Digital Design

The video exemplifies a real learning-in-action where our Mechanical Engineering students actively participated in the Engineering Design Graphics module. Students convert their SolidWorks design into a hologram and display it through head-mounted Microsoft Hololens to superimpose their engineering part for ease of manipulation and assembly. This skill set allows students to design their prototypes digitally on the fly and benefit from fabrication time/cost reduction.

Mechanical Engineering
Immersive Technology in Teaching Engineering Design

This video shows how students learn and understand Engineering Design through immersive technology.

Mechanical Design and Manufacturing Engineering
Lean Manufacturing Applied Learning

This video project assignment by our Mechanical Design and Manufacturing Engineering students demonstrates an everyday example of Value Stream Mapping which is an effective Lean Manufacturing visualisation tool applied in the industry to improve production processes.

Marine Programmes IWSP Poster Day (MIPD)

The Marine Programmes Poster Day (MIPD) is an annual event for the Year 3 Marine programmes students to showcase their Integrated Work Study Programme (IWSP) projects through Poster and Proof-of-Concept presentations. It has been well attended by the industry guests, IWSP partners, SIT and Newcastle University faculty, staff, and students.
