Course Overview
Effective from AY2025/26 Trimester 2 (January 2026), the Postgraduate Certificate in Civil Engineering will be transiting to Graduate Certificate in Civil Engineering. For more details, please refer to the full notice here.
This module covers the principles of foundation design and construction to minimise the risk of catastrophic failure and excessive settlement.
The shallow foundation covers individual footing, combined footing, strip footing, raft and piled-raft. The deep foundation includes driven piles, press-in piles, bored piles, barrette piles and caissons.
There will be extensive coverage on static and dynamic pile testing and the interpretation of test results.
Who Should Attend
- Geotechnical Engineers, Civil Engineers, Site Engineers, Field Engineers, Project Engineers
- Construction Managers
Prerequisites
- Candidate should possess a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering
What You Will Learn
Design of shallow foundations
- The design of footings and rafts will be covered, including settlements and stability consideration
Piled foundation
- The course will encompass the design of single piles and pile groups, considering both vertical and lateral capacities
- Negative skin friction effects will be included
- Finally, pile testing methods will be explained
