This module has an updated learning pathway that can now be stacked towards a Graduate Certificate in Process Safety Operations.
There is increasing emphasis on the importance of managing human factors to achieve improved safety in process industries.
This is a multidisciplinary science centres on the interactions between humans and the work system, with a focus on designing human–machine interactions that optimise human and system performance.
Human factors engineering (HFE) is about making it easy for people to do things right and difficult for them to do things wrong.
Major accidents have highlighted the importance of addressing this aspect of performance, e.g. wrong operator response, slow response and incorrect diagnosis.

Associate Professor/ Director, Professional Officers, Food, Chemical and Biotechnology, Singapore Institute of Technology
Dr. Lim Kok Hwa is an Associate Professor and Director, Professional Officers Division (POD) at Singapore Institute of Technology. Over the past decade, he has taught a variety of courses, including Industrial Chemical Processes, and Industrial Chemical and Biological Plant Safety. He is also experienced in emergency/contingency planning, and is involved in many committees dealing with safety matters and safety reviews. He received a Bachelor of Science (First Class Honours) in Computational Science and Chemistry, and a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering from the National University of Singapore. He later obtained his doctoral degree from the Technische Universität München (TUM) in Germany.
Principal Risk Consultant
Thia Cheong Meng received his Master of Technology (Knowledge Engineering) from the National University of Singapore (Institute of System Science) and a Bachelor of Science (Chemical Engineering) from the University of Singapore.
Cheong Meng is a Principal Risk Consultant with more than 35 years of experience in process safety and risk consultancy in the petrochemical industry. He has worked for several major companies in the areas of engineering and operations with responsibilities in process engineering design, HDPE plant construction, commissioning and operation, production of metal finishing products, and management of poison chemicals.
Additionally, he has played a pivotal role in conducting process safety studies, encompassing activities like Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA), Hazard and Operability Studies (HAZOP), Safety Integrity Level (SIL) Classification and Verification, and Fire and Gas Detectors Mapping. His proficiency extends to tasks such as safety case preparation, audits, and the development of reliability diagrams. He has also contributed to roadmap studies for digitising process safety information systems and conducted user requirements analysis for real-time emergency response systems utilised by industrial chemical complexes.
