Course Overview

Domain

Format
Modular Certification Course
Duration
3+ months

Effective from AY2025/26 Trimester 2 (January 2026), the Postgraduate Certificate in Civil Engineering will be transiting to Graduate Certificate in Civil Engineering. For more details, please refer to the full notice here.

This module focuses on the concepts of structural stability and dynamic problems in civil engineering.

The module will also touch on developing fundamental equations and explain the structural response with respect to both dynamic loads and static stability. Application-based activities will be conducted during the study, including modelling and calculating the buckling and natural frequency behaviour of complex structural systems. Emphasis is placed on both analytical methods and numerical solution techniques to demonstrate the importance of model validation.

Computation tools will be developed and integrated into individual project assignments for the assessment of complex structures (which are subjected to dynamic excitation and stability constraints). A final written paper will assess the fundamental knowledge acquired during the module.

Who Should Attend

  • Civil engineers, site engineers, field engineers, project engineers
  • Construction managers
Prerequisites
  • Candidate should possess a bachelor degree in Civil Engineering
  • Candidates should be familiar with basic differential equation and matrix mathematics, as well as basic structural analysis

What You Will Learn

Stability and dynamic theory

  • Assess and derive the behaviour of beam and plate elements subject to both dynamic and stability constraints.

Hand calculation of stability and vibration properties

  • Perform stability and natural frequency calculations for complex frame problems using symmetry and related substitute frame techniques.

Computational tools for stability and vibration analysis

  • Create a computer tool (MATLAB or spreadsheet) for buckling and vibration analysis of complex frame problems; validated against commercial codes.

Finite element analysis of stability and vibration problems

  • Determine and interpret the frequency response and post critical stable behaviour of beam and/or plate elements using commercial codes.
