Course Overview
This course aims to equip physiotherapists with principles of clinical exercise physiology to understand the impact of exercise or activity on the human physiological system.
The goal is to facilitate the effective management and prevention of chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) through modifications in exercise, lifestyle, and behaviours.
The course is designed to build on the understanding of exercise physiology and clinical exercise prescription knowledge acquired during entry-level physiotherapy training. It is appropriate for early-career physiotherapists with two to three years of post-registration experience. The course aims to enrich the application of current concepts in the assessment and management of non-communicable diseases.
The course helps to deepen the understanding of physiological responses to exercise in individuals who exercise regularly and those who do not. Specifically designed for adult learners, the course uses a blended learning approach that includes self-directed learning (SDL), flipped classroom, team-based learning (TBL), problem-based learning (PBL), discussion seminars, and practicum. The course will also include an analysis and critical appraisal of supporting theory and available evidence, along with clinical reasoning for practical application of assessment and management techniques in the management of patients with NCDs and other co-morbidities.

Prerequisites
AHPC-(Full) Registered Physiotherapists with at least 2 years of clinical experience.
What You Will Learn
- Understand the cardiovascular and common chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and the process of rehabilitation
- Describe, assess, interpret, and analyse common exercise assessment methodologies
- Synthesise assessment data using suggested clinical reasoning, decision-making model, and evidence-based practice to establish clinical exercise prescription
- Make informed decision based on the evaluation of effectiveness, safety, precautions, and contraindications of the exercise prescription plan for the individuals with NCDs
- Prescribe exercise safely and competently for the individuals with NCDs
- In specifics, you will explore the following topics:
- Cellular energetics and systems coupling
- Acute physiological responses to aerobic and anaerobic exercises
- Exercise assessment and interpretation, including clinic- and field-based testing strategies, such as cardiopulmonary exercise testing
- Exercise training principles and prescription (aerobic and resistance training)
- Risk stratification and exercise modifications
- Concepts of strength training such as endurance, power and strength; loading, injuries and injury management
- ECG reading and interpretation
- Long-term physiological adaptations
- Exercise, pain and neural pathways
- Monitoring and responding to adverse events during exercise
- Age-related changes and gender differences of the musculoskeletal, neurological, cardiovascular and pulmonary system
- Exercise as a preventive strategy for non-communicable diseases (NCDs)
