Plates of Plenty -
Engaging the Community Through Food

The Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) collaborated with ‘Food From The Heart’ to organise ‘Plates of Plenty’, a food donation drive aimed at combating food insecurity and promoting healthy eating in Punggol. This effort is part of the “10 Acts for Good” campaign to commemorate SIT’s 10th Anniversary.

Rallying the SIT community to contribute

10 students volunteered their time on 20 and 21 January to collect food items from SIT staff and students at the SIT Punggol Campus. Donations included essential staples like rice, cooking oil, and canned goods. SGFARMERS and DiMuto also generously contributed donations. All of the donations, which included approximately 100 packets of vegetables, and 400 fruits were then transported to the main warehouse for further distribution to the community.

Sharing nutrition tips with Punggol residents

On 4 and 6 February, 16 SIT Dietetics and Nutrition students set up an engagement booth at Food From The Heart’s Community Shop@Punggol. They served up tips on healthier eating, shared simple, nutritious recipes, and hosted a games booth to make learning about healthy eating fun and interactive. Ms Sun Xueling, Minister of State at the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Social and Family Development, even made a special visit to show her support for the initiative!

Community impact

Residents who took part in the food nutrition quiz left with easy, nutritious recipes and fresh produce, reinforcing healthy eating habits in the community. Plates of Plenty reflects SIT's dedication to engaging the Punggol community. This partnership with Food from the Heart shows the power of collective action, making a real impact on residents' lives.
