SIT Punggol Community Clean-Up:
Keeping Our Campus and Environment Clean

our commitment to
a better environment

At the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT), we’re committed to keeping our campus and its surroundings pristine — not just for ourselves, but for the entire community.

Recently, our dedication took form in the SIT Punggol Community Clean-Up event, where over 25 SIT staff and students gathered to make a positive impact by removing litter around our Punggol Campus. This was part of our 10 Acts for Good – a year-long community initiative to commemorate our 10 years as an autonomous university.

Keep the community clean, Protect our planet

During the clean-up, participants collected nearly 27kg of rubbish, including plastic bottles, bags, food wrappers, and cigarette butts. It was quite significant considering that we had only just moved into our new Punggol campus.

This effort not only made the surroundings visibly cleaner but also shed light on the types of waste that are often found around this area.

Reflecting on the kinds of trash collected is a timely reminder of our shared responsibility to maintain a clean and healthy environment while considering our waste impact. With Singapore's Semakau Landfill projected to reach full capacity by 2035, the urgency to reduce waste and recycle effectively is more pressing than ever.

Together, events like these remind us of our role in keeping our communities clean and inspire us to be more mindful of our actions to protect our planet for future generations.

We look forward to continuing this clean-up initiative and expand it to cover more areas around our campus vicinity. There’s still so much more to be done.

Check, Clean, Recycle

Did you know that around 40% of items placed in recycling bins cannot actually be recycled due to contamination? Proper recycling habits are essential to conserving landfill space and supporting sustainable waste management.

Together, events like these remind us of our role in keeping our communities clean and inspire us to be more mindful of our actions to protect our planet for future generations.

When you’re looking to recycle, just remember 3 simple steps: Check, Clean, Recycle!

  1. Check that all items are clean of waste (additional points if you separate them from their wrapping!);
  2. Clean items with a rinse and dry them;
  3. Recycle items by placing them in their respective bins.
