Scenario-based videos to enhance applied research teaching and learning
Grant Name
SIT Advancement for Learning and Teaching (SALT)Abstract
To develop students’ competencies in conducting industry applied research, it is compulsory for all SIT programmes to incorporate a capstone module. This implies a paramount need to first teach our students how to do proper research. With the involvement of industry partners, the quality of the solutions and deliverables is likely to have a major impact on SIT and its students’ reputation. The key challenge, which falls on the supervisors, is how to teach students to do valid applied research.
In this project, we propose to create scenario-based videos to aid students in formulating valid applied research question(s). Through vivid and lifelike videos, we hope to instil greater research interest among students and also be able to impart basic research skills to them.
A pilot run of four videos was produced in January 2020 with assistance from CoLEAD’s media producers to teach Accountancy students the fundamentals of research. Positive feedback was received from the students who participated in the pilot run. It was suggested that the content communicated through the video increased clarity of the research topic, aroused students’ interest in applied research, and is useful in helping students to formulate research question(s).
To boost the overall learning experience, we are keen to explore different variants of scenario-based videos. Apart from the classic two-dimensional videos, we also consider interactive videos for a more engaging and relatable learning experience.
