Course Overview
This course is designed for physiotherapists practising in musculoskeletal physiotherapy, the largest specialisation in physiotherapy.
It offers a comprehensive exploration of the Mulligan Concept of Mobilisation with Movement (MWM) approach, developed by Brian Mulligan F.N.Z.S.P. (Hon), Dip. M.T. from Wellington, New Zealand. This unique approach to manual therapy addresses musculoskeletal disorders using pain-free manual joint “repositioning” techniques to restore function and abolish pain.
The course is divided into two parts, each focused on specific areas:
Part A (Upper Quarter) – Peripheral Joints, Cervical and Thoracic Spines
In this segment, you will delve into the Mulligan approach to manual therapy, with a particular focus on the cervical and thoracic spine, as well as the upper extremities. This segment includes lectures, patient demonstrations and dedicated lab sessions, providing you with an in-depth understanding of the MWM approach for the upper quarter.
Part B (Lower Quarter) – Peripheral Joints, Lumbar Spine and Sacroiliac Joints
This part shifts the focus to the lumbar spine, sacroiliac joint and the lower extremities. Similar to Part A, it combines lectures, patient demonstrations and practical lab sessions, ensuring a comprehensive exploration of the MWM approach for the lower quarter.
Upon successful completion of both Parts A and B, you will be well-equipped to incorporate these techniques into your clinical practice. Furthermore, for those seeking to advance their expertise, you will be able to take an advanced course (Part C), along with an examination that can lead to qualification as a certified Mulligan practitioner.
Who Should Attend
- Graduate physiotherapists with a Bachelor of Physiotherapy or equivalent
Prerequisites
As a postgraduate course, learners will be expected to:
- Understand contraindicators to manual therapy
- Possess a knowledge of anatomy and biomechanics
- Be able to perform a thorough history and assessment to establish subjective and objective markers for test retesting
- Possess patient handling and communication skills
- Be equipped with clinical reasoning skills to facilitate the use of other therapies as indicated
What You Will Learn
- Apply Mulligan Concept and MWM techniques in the assessment of musculoskeletal dysfunction
- Perform the MWM approach of treatment techniques for musculoskeletal conditions
- Apply and practice Mulligan Concept of MWM principles and treatment techniques with fellow participants in the course
- Use of Mulligan Concept of MWM assessment and treatment techniques, with sound clinical reasoning framework to modify management of patients, including:
