The SITizen-DNA
Our aim is to produce work-ready graduates armed with more than just paper qualifications, but skills that can strengthen and energise the industries and the wider community. The four key traits of the SITizen-DNA serves as guiding principles for curriculum design, pedagogical approach, and student interaction.
Thinking Tinkerers
A ‘thinking tinkerer’ is someone who is not just passionate about hands-on work, but also able to understand and apply the knowledge picked up during the process. He/She is both skilled with his/her hands and possesses theoretical knowledge. Hence, he/she is constantly looking to improve things and solve practical problems with innovative solutions.
As Singapore’s economy moves up the value chain, industries will require trained manpower with applicable skills. In addition, there is also an increasing demand for workers to be able to think on their feet, apply their knowledge and tailor it to changing situations.
Able to Learn, Unlearn and Relearn
Someone who is able to ‘learn, unlearn and relearn’ embraces change and continues to learn beyond school. He/She knows that new knowledge opens the door to new opportunities. Hence, he/she is adaptable to change and subscribes to lifelong learning.
In the last 50 years, Singapore’s economy has gone through various transformations — from labour-intensive to skills-intensive, and from capital-intensive to knowledge-intensive. Technology is advancing at an unprecedented speed of change.. To stay on top of the economy’s ever changing landscape, graduates need to constantly ‘learn, unlearn and relearn’ to stay ahead.
Catalysts for Transformation
A catalyst for transformation effects change by increasing efficiency and creating value through innovation.
SIT graduates are trained to be ‘catalysts for transformation’. They seek to understand the organisation they are in at the process and system level, and find ways to improve and implement efficiency. They bring in new ideas and create new products or services to generate new growth pathways.
To remain competitive in the disruptive economy, it is essential for businesses to adopt a highly productive mode of operation, with a focus on value-adding solutions. SIT works closely with the industry, especially with SMEs, to identify challenges and problems that our students can work on. Such win-win collaborations translate into tremendous opportunities for students as they navigate unchartered waters and grow in their respective fields.
Grounded in the Community
Being ‘grounded in the community’ means our students and graduates serve and strengthen the community that they are in through their skills and knowledge. As part of the larger Singapore community, our students work together across various disciplines to engage with their communities and understand their needs, making improvements that impact the social, economic or environmental aspects of the community they live and work within.
