Sustainable Campus
We aim to create a sustainable campus where well-being, responsible consumption and waste management become integral practices for staff and students. Through regular activities, we seek to embed sustainable principles not only in our campus but also into the fabric of daily living.
Integrating Sustainability in Our Campus Development
Sustainability was central to the planning of our new Punggol Campus. The campus was designed with eco-friendly features to reduce energy consumption, conserve water and promote biodiversity. We believe that by surrounding ourselves with a sustainable and conducive environment, we enhance the quality of our work and study spaces.

Situated by the waterfront, SIT’s Punggol Campus preserves an existing forest along the Heritage Trail, creating a park within the campus. All buildings have been awarded the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) Green Mark Platinum, reflecting SIT's strong commitment to safeguarding the environment. The campus is home to two Super Low Energy (SLE) buildings, including the food court which features Building-Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) that act as a skylight, allowing natural light to flood the space while generating renewable energy.

In 2022, SIT was awarded the Active Beautiful Clean (ABC) Waters Certified (Gold) Award for our rain harvesting and sustainable stormwater management efforts integrated into our campus. These include features such as bioswales and rain gardens, which not only capture and filter rainwater but also enhance water conservation efforts. Through a comprehensive water management framework, the campus captures rainwater from approximately 40% of its land area, saving about 85,000 cubic metres of non-drinking water annually—enough to fill 34 Olympic-size swimming pools. Green roofs and designed landscaped areas also promote biodiversity and contribute to a healthier urban ecosystem.

Upholding Sustainability in Our Campus Operations
Sustainability was central to the planning of our new Punggol Campus and remains a guiding principle in our campus operations. From design to daily life, we aim to operate with intention in every aspect of our journey. With more than 20,000 Internet of Things (IoT) sensors that collect real-time data on resource usage and occupancy patterns, we gain valuable insights that help set informed goals and drive continual improvements in manpower and resource management.

Working Towards Zero Waste
SIT aims to reduce our waste generation and work towards being a zero-waste campus.

Green Takeaway service is available at our Campus Court food court
Disposable takeaway receptacles or utensils are not provided at Punggol Campus food courts as part of our commitment to reducing waste. Patrons are encouraged to bring their own cups and containers or opt for the Green Takeaway service, which provides reusable cups and containers on a loan basis.

Food waste bins have been deployed to collect food scraps, which are then processed in a composter and converted into fertiliser for the campus greenery. In addition, transparent segregated recycling bins are strategically placed around the campus to minimise contamination and improve recycling rates for materials such as metal cans, plastic bottles and paper.
Inculcating Sustainability as a Core Value
SIT’s core values support the University’s vision and mission. They underpin all our actions – from educating our students to undertaking research and shaping our policies and operations.

Sustainability is one of our core values and we promote building a Sustainability culture through events, workshops and e-newsletters to engage our staff and students. We run regular Cultural Induction Programme workshops to promote a positive and conducive work culture. Additionally, a sustainability module is available for staff to take as part of their Learning and Development.

As part of our commitment to sustainability, we are integrating sustainable procurement into SIT’s operations. SIT’s Commitment to Sustainable Procurement serves as a guide for staff and students, encouraging the adoption of the “4 Rs” principles – Reduce, Reuse, Responsible Sourcing, and Responsible Disposal. By embedding these practices into our purchasing decisions, we aim to minimise environmental impact and promote ethical supply chains.
