A-Levels

Minimum Age Requirement

Applicants who are Singapore Citizens, Permanent Residents or flow-through foreign students1  must be at least 18 years of age as of 1 January of the matriculation year, or have completed a minimum of 12 years of formal education beginning with Primary 1 or equivalent.

1Refers to foreign students who have completed their tertiary education in the Junior Colleges, Millennia Institute, Integrated Programme (IP) schools, polytechnics, or Specialised Independent Schools viz. NUS High School of Mathematics and Science, School of Science and Technology (SST), School of the Arts (SOTA), and Singapore Sports School.

General A-Levels Requirement

Applicants submitting the Singapore-Cambridge GCE A-Levels must have obtained passes in at least two subjects at A/H2 Level and offered either General Paper (GP) or Knowledge and Inquiry (KI) in the same sitting.

In addition, applicants must meet one of the following Mother Tongue Language (MTL) requirements:

  • A minimum 'S' grade for the H1 or H2 MTL paper or General Studies in Chinese taken at the GCE A-Level examination
  • Pass in the MTL 'B' Syllabus paper at the A-Level examination
  • A minimum D7 for the higher MTL paper taken at the O Level examination

H1 Mother Tongue Language will be included in the computation of the University Admission Score (UAS) if it improves the UAS of the candidate.

For those who are exempted from MTL, the MOE-approved subject-in-lieu will be considered as their MTL subject. Those who have not fulfilled the MTL requirement may still apply for admission. Their application will be reviewed without prejudice. However, if accepted, they will be required to (i) attain any of the minimum requirements as a private candidate, or (ii) attend equivalent courses conducted by pre-approved language schools before being allowed to graduate.

Applicants who have been away from Singapore’s school system for a few years, and have not kept up with the study of their MTL or a language that can be offered as MTL-in-lieu, may apply for MTL exemption. The MTL exemption application will be facilitated by  universities as part of the university application, and the results made known to applicants who receive admission offers from the university. Please note that MOE does not accept direct applications for MTL exemption. The application for MTL exemption will also not affect the evaluation of the application for a place in the university.

Revised University Admission Score (UAS) Computation from AY2026

From AY2026, the following subjects will be taken into consideration for UAS computation:

  • 3 H2 content-based subjects
  • General Paper (GP)

H1 Mother Tongue Language and/or the fourth H1/H2 content-based subject may be considered if it improves the UAS of the candidate.

Note: From AY2026, H2 Knowledge & Inquiry (KI) will no longer be considered in lieu of GP.

If offered, H2 KI will be considered as a H2 content-based subject. Admission Requirements From AY2026, students will be required to obtain a pass grade in Project Work to be eligible for admission.
