SINGAPORE – The prospect of an evening lecture would probably elicit a yawn. However the Auditorium, SIT@Dover was packed with eager participants on the evening of 26 Aug, for the inaugural lecture in the SIT Lecture Series.
Close to 500 participants including students, educators and professionals attended SIT’s first public lecture ‘Unlocking your Creative Confidence’ by Tom Kelley, partner at IDEO, award-winning global design firm and author of New York Times bestseller, Creative Confidence.
“The SIT Lecture Series is where industry meets education.” said Professor Tan Thiam Soon, President, SIT. Through the lecture series, SIT intends to facilitate the sharing of knowledge and ideas among practitioners, educators and students, and serves as a nexus for professional to keep abreast with the latest industry developments.
“I am really happy that SIT organized this lecture and that it was open to the public” said Yvonne Tan, senior designer with an architectural firm, “It’s a great opportunity to hear from experts like Tom Kelley and also a chance to network with SIT professors and industry colleagues.”
Kelley captivated the audience with his humour and challenged the notion that creativity belongs to a select few. He spoke passionately about how each and every one of us has an innate creativity that we can tap into.
As children, we express our creativity freely. Kelley shared that in a kindergarten, you would see a flurry of hands quickly pop up in response to the question “who in here is creative?” Yet as adults, we are often distanced from the confidence which could give our ideas a shot at being realized. Through a series of real-life case studies, he showed how creativity can be applied in any field and how it can be a key determinant for success.
With the strong response and positive feedback from participants, SIT will be organizing more public lectures for students, educators and professionals in Singapore in the future. Upcoming lectures will be published on the SIT website.
