Graduates from Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) are faring well in the job market, as they enjoy high employment rates, competitive salaries and a seamless transition to industry. These findings were based on the Graduate Employment Survey (GES) 2014, jointly conducted by the National University of Singapore (NUS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore Management University (SMU) and SIT, and commissioned by the Ministry of Education (MOE). This is the first year that SIT is part of this annual survey, which includes graduates from SIT’s various Overseas University (OU) partners as well as NUS, NTU and SMU. A total of 1,006 out of the 1,212 SIT students who graduated in 2014 took part in the survey from March to May 2015.
Key findings of GES 2014
In 2014, SIT’s graduates enjoyed a high overall employment rate of 91.7%, with 86.0% of economically active graduates securing full-time permanent employment six months after completing their final examinations.
The gross median monthly salary of SIT graduates working in full-time permanent jobs is S$3,000, with Nursing graduates earning a gross median monthly salary of $3,511, and Mechanical Engineering graduates earning gross median monthly salaries of $3,100 to $3,250.
SIT’s focus on industry collaborations and its strong symbiotic relationship with the industry have enhanced the employability of graduates and rendered them the ability to seamlessly enter the workforce. As part of SIT’s applied education model, students in SIT’s full-time degree programmes get to integrate knowledge and skills gained in the classroom with real-world practice by working in companies. During their course of study, students from the SIT-conferred degree programmes embark on an Integrated Work Study Programme (IWSP), an eight- to 12-month educational platform immersing students in a real work environment.
Associate Professor Ivan Lee, Vice-President (Industry & Community), SIT commented on the survey findings, “Our high employment rate, competitive entry-level pay and the employment of our students in relevant jobs show that our students are well-equipped for the industry. Our degrees offer our students a holistic education, allowing our students to have realistic expectations and a good understanding of the nature of their jobs by the time they graduate. Imbued with the SIT-DNA, our graduates are adaptable to market conditions, and can learn, unlearn and relearn – an important mindset which enhances their value to the employers.”
