SIT Trustee Honoured at President's Science and Technology Awards 2023

 

Mr Quek Gim Pew received Singapore's top scientific honour for his contributions to advancing Singapore's science and technology efforts.

Mr Quek Gim Pew, a distinguished member of the SIT Board of Trustees, has received the prestigious President’s Science & Technology Medal for his pivotal role in developing Singapore’s research ecosystem in critical areas including defence capabilities, space technology, advancing quantum engineering, artificial intelligence and high-performance computing.

The honour was conferred at the annual President's Science and Technology Awards (PSTA) on 20 October 2023, organised by the National Research Foundation Singapore (NRF). PSTA celebrates top talent in Singapore's material science and space technologies fields. It is the highest honour conferred upon research scientists and engineers in Singapore whose work has resulted in significant scientific, technological or economic benefits for the country.

“Throughout my career, my mentors inspired me to harness science and technology to serve national needs and contribute to Singapore’s continued success. I am truly humbled by the recognition and would like to dedicate this award to my mentors,” said Mr Quek.

In addition to his significant contributions to the development of Singapore’s science and technology capabilities, Mr Quek has championed STEM initiatives to foster the next generation of scientists and engineers.

He shares inspirational words to aspiring STEM professionals: “In our challenging times, with global threats like climate change and pandemics, and uncertainties surrounding evolving world order, science and technology are critical enablers. As budding engineers, you possess the skills and competencies to help Singapore navigate and thrive in this changing landscape. Seize the opportunity to make a difference.”

Mr Quek spent over four decades in the Ministry of Defence, where he drove defence research, enhanced strategic capabilities and strengthened international partnerships. As Chief Defence Scientist, he facilitated collaborations between MINDEF and the RIE ecosystem, elevating Singapore's defence capabilities. Mr Quek also transitioned to quantum technologies, shifting the country’s primary focus on fundamental research to a nationwide initiative that harnesses quantum technology to support economic and national imperatives.
