SIT collaborates with Amazon Web Services

SINGAPORE, 6 March – The Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS), a global leader and pioneer in cloud computing services, to collaborate on education, research and innovation in the cloud.

AWS provides Amazon’s developer customers with access to in-the-cloud infrastructure services based on Amazon’s own back-end technology platform, which developers can use to enable virtually any type of business.

Witnessed by Khoong Hock Yun, Assistant Chief Executive (Infrastructure & Services Development) of the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore, the MOU was signed by Professor Ting Seng Kiong, Deputy President (Academic) & Provost, SIT and Peter Moore, Managing Director, APAC Global Public Sector, AWS.

SIT, with support by AWS, aims to develop a Cloud Education, Research and Innovation Centre (CERIC) to bolster research and educate SIT students reading the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) degree programme recently launched this year. The centre aims to educate SIT students and generate public awareness on Cloud Computing, as well as provide services to the general public to source cloud-based innovations. Aligned with the industry-focused nature of SIT’s ICT programme, CERIC is also expected to provide industry-relevant courseware and architecture training to SIT students that may then lead to certifications by AWS.

“Through the collaboration with SIT, AWS provides the knowledge for students and researchers to gain practical learning and hands-on experience in using cloud technology to develop projects at its Cloud Innovation, Research and Education center, “ said Peter Moore, Regional Managing Director, Amazon Web Services. “We look forward to working with SIT to build an important foundation for a more ready and innovative workforce that better prepares them to contribute to the industry.”

Professor Tan Thiam Soon, President, SIT, said, “Cloud computing is increasingly an indispensable part of our lives. Online collaboration in an open environment is quickly becoming the norm, especially for education and to boost work productivity. I am very pleased to partner Amazon Web Services to educate SIT students in growing and promoting cloud services. Furthermore, I hope that through this partnership we will encourage adoption of cloud services in industry as a viable means to improve productivity and innovation.”

SIT aims to encourage adoption of cloud services in industry as a viable means to improve productivity and drive innovation. In line with SIT’s mission to deliver industry-focused education, SIT’s cloud architecture training may lead to certification by AWS in the future.
