SINGAPORE, 11 March – A student design from SIT-The Glasgow School of Art was selected as one of the final 15 projects in the Fentress Global Challenge 2013: Upcycle Architecture competition.

Organised by Fentress Architects, an international design firm known for their iconic public architecture such as the Denver International Airport and the Tom Bradley International Terminal at LAX, the Fentress Global Challenge 2013 attracted a total of 166 submissions from design students all over the world.
In addition to being among the final 15 in the competition, the design project by SIT-GSA interior design students Cheryl Foo, Demi Goh and Clement Lee won the People’s Choice Award. Their project poster, titled National Aerated Water Company, on Fentress Architects’ Facebook Album received more than 1,000 likes.
“This is the first batch of SIT-GSA interior design students and I am very proud that their designs have made it to the international stage,” said Assistant Professor, Jawn Lim, faculty member, SIT.
Being selected for the finals came as a pleasant surprise for Foo, Goh and Lee.
“As a young designer, it is a milestone to be selected for the finals of an international competition,” said Lee.
The team attribute their success to the strong teamwork that they had among the trio. However, the critiques they received from their classmates were just as important.
“It really helped us a lot because from the feedback, we changed and modified our design according to our classmates’ feedback,” said Foo, “when we get too engrossed in our own project, we often fail to see what we left out.”
Although only one team was selected for the finals of the competition, it was a success for everyone in the cohort who contributed their ideas to refine the project. According to Assistant Professor Lim, not only did the students gain more confidence in themselves through the competition, they also started to develop their own identities as designers.
In June 2014, the students reading the Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Interior Design with SIT-GSA will be travelling to United Kingdom to complete a 3-week attachment at the home campus of The Glasgow School of Art.
