SIT-UofG Mechanical Engineering Students Clinch Top 2 Spots in National Engineering Competition

 

Held on 30 September 2023, Alex Lim and Shane Lim from SIT-UofG Mechanical Engineering programme won first and second places in the annual national competition organised by Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE).

In a dazzling showcase of engineering prowess, two students from the Singapore Institute of Technology – University of Glasgow (SIT-UofG) Mechanical Engineering (MEC) programme stood out in the recently concluded national Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Speak Out for Engineering (SOfE) presentation competition held on 30 September 2023 at Republic Polytechnic. The annual event hosted by IMechE aims to promote the ability to communicate mechanical engineering subjects effectively and develop an interest in the art of communication. There was fierce competition among 7 budding affiliates and young members from various institutions as our SITizens came out on top.

Facing intense competition, Alex Lim clinched the top prize with his visionary presentation, "Maglev Runway", which explored the transformative potential of magnetic levitation technology in aviation. His exceptional concept and eloquent delivery earned him first place, walking away with £300 in cash and a Certificate of Achievement.

Meanwhile, Shane Lim secured second place with his insightful discussion on the pivotal role of Robotic Operating System 2 (ROS 2) in maintaining standardisation within the manufacturing sector, even amidst the industry's shift towards customisation. His nuanced exploration of the delicate balance between tailored solutions and standardised practices was met with great acclaim. Shane walked away with £200 in cash and a Certificate of Achievement for his efforts.

Alex, as the winner of the competition, proudly represented Singapore in the Southeast Asia (SEA) regional IMechE SOfE Competition on 28 October 2023 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where he achieved second place.

This marks the fourth occasion that SIT-UofG MEC students have secured top honours in national IMechE SOfE events since the inception of the SIT-UofG IMechE Student Chapter in 2018. Furthermore, this is the second time that SIT-UofG MEC students have proudly represented Singapore and received accolades in SEA SOfE competitions.
